2024 came in with a bang and the design world has been a buzz. Now that we are 4 months into the year, here are some of the things we are seeing.

Peach Fuzz came in strong as Pantone’s 2024 color of the year while Etsy says that romance is taking center stage. We are seeing both of these things coming to fruition within only a few months of the year.

So what do we see trending hard? Feminine and girly are certainly at the forefront, but you will also see hardworking textures like denim come to center stage.

As always, do not be afraid of niches with loyal followings. We continue to see heightened response to designers and artists who know who they sell to. This includes the science nerd all the way to the charmed jewelry enthusiasts.

For those that want to battle AI’s image sameness we are seeing in the market, simply step out with your own style. We see homegrown, personally-made, and artist-aware becoming an even more valuable aspect of customers who want to purchase from real designers and artists.

As always no matter what the trend, we love designers who are true to themselves. That authenticity always shines through especially as they create smart, consistent business practices.

Why Are All of Design Suite Courses Now 15 Weeks Long?

During 2024 and 2025, one of Dr. Carina Gardner’s main goals has been to upgrade all of the coursework to a new academic standard. Carina states, “Right now we are seeing anyone with a tiny bit of technical skill offer a course. Because of this, there is no technical or academic standard that helps customers and students understand how much time and effort those courses will take.”

By changing all the curriculum in Design Suite to 8 week (quarter long) and 15 week (semester long) course work, it will help customers understand the extent of exactly what they are purchasing so that they can continue their professional development.

Many of the courses in Design Suite have lifetime access (of the site designsuitecourses.com) and these are continually upgraded. All 17 courses will be getting a reboot over the next two years at no cost to students.

Welcome to the Make and Design Podcast Episode 417: Illustration for Meetings with Ashton Rodenhiser.

On this podcast episode Carina chats with Ashton Rodenhiser, a professional sketch-noter who provides graphic notes in the form of drawings in meetings, strategic planning sessions or conferences. Basically any place where someone is conveying information to a group or having a conversation about something.

Carina learns about the fascinating process of taking notes using drawings in order to more clearly remember the ideas and information presented in meetings. Ashton can do this in all types of business environments and industries. She does research for each environment to make sure she has some background on the company before she meets with her client.

Carina and Ashton discuss Ashton’s process and how she knows what type of graphic to use while doing it on the fly. Ashton explains that she has a bank of images in her mind that she already knows how to draw and is able to quickly pull from those images. She explains that building your muscle memory in this way allows you to draw similar things to illustrate similar ideas. Sometimes she uses icons in one presentation and a lot of people in others. Combining her sketching skills with humor is one of the things that attracts clients, she says.

Sketchnotes combine text and simple images to communicate information quickly and memorably. Notetaking done this way is scientifically proven to help notetakers retain

information eight times better than just the traditional writing method. It allows the observer to view the conversation in illustrations while they are listening to the presentation of information. This enables the listener to engage in the moment as well as allowing them to have something tangible to refer back to after the meeting is over.

Ashton has built an entire career of attending meetings to help communicators clearly explain processes, ideas and information while helping listeners clearly understand the message. She also teaches others interested in using this method how to listen, synthesize ideas and translate them into drawing form. The Power of Calling Yourself a Designer

Why do you need the confidence to call yourself a designer?

What is a Designer? What makes someone a designer vs. not a designer? To me a designer is one that takes a concept and brings it to life in various forms. So, if you are creating and putting things together then you are a designer, no matter your skill level.

As designers we all have varying styles, talents, and creative skill sets which make us different from each other, but we all have at least one thing in common and that is the title of “designer.” But why is there a hesitancy to fully embrace this title? Is it fear of judgment, or simply a lack of confidence, or something else? This is something that I hear all the time, “I have Imposter Syndrome”, “Am I good enough”, and “I’m not nearly as good as so and so!” These are all limiting beliefs that will inevitably hold you back if you let them or listen to them. However, it’s time to embrace this title and acknowledge the importance of confidently owning your identity as a designer. Here’s why:

Validation of Your Craft

By calling yourself a designer, you’re not just acknowledging your own abilities, but also validating the countless hours of learning, practice, and dedication you’ve invested in your craft. It’s a recognition of your skills and expertise in shaping ideas, solving problems, and creating impactful visuals that resonate with your audiences. Even if you are just starting out, we learn by doing and everyone has to start somewhere.

Empowerment and Self-belief

Confidence breeds success. When you confidently proclaim yourself as a designer, you are more willing to take on new challenges, push your boundaries, and pursue opportunities that align with your passion. This type of thinking will take you places that you may never thought possible. Believing in your abilities opens the door to growth, allowing you to unleash your full potential. When you lack that confidence, you are more likely to stay stagnant and not move forward because you are too scared to try. Dawn K’s Journey of Creativity, Passion, and Profit with Design Suite

“I was looking at Instagram and saw an ad from [Carina Gardner Inc.] and I said ‘okay, I’ve been saying I want a way to make money from this room… and this could be an option’. I was skeptical, but I said, ‘given the cost, I don’t have much to lose, and let’s go for it.’ And I went through Design Bootcamp, and each day I was tuning in after work, sometimes I’d watch if I had a lunch break, if I had a little bit of time I’d try to watch. And each day I went, ‘oh my goodness, oh this is amazing!’ and there were so many breakthroughs… also just what the possibilities were and what that potential was. And the fact that I felt like I didn’t know how to get there a year ago… to know that there was a way to do it is really what got me hooked and it got me to sign up, and it changed my life.”

The journey that Dawn went on from a hesitant skeptic to a thriving entrepreneur is a testament to the transformative power of the Design Suite program. By doing Design Bootcamp, and then moving on to Design Suite, was huge for Dawn. It allowed her to have time to create all of the projects she had been dreaming of for a long time. She brought a business to life out of it while still having a 40 hour week job as well. Passion was ignited, and she was committed. “I’m now making money, and when I started Design Suite, I was looking at all the people who are or who were where I am now… I would start looking up everybody going, ‘oh my goodness oh my goodness oh their work is so good, and look what they’ve accomplished!’ I didn’t think I would be in that same position, but if you put in the work and you put in the time, and you’re consistent about it, you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible,” Dawn eloquently says.

Not only were her dreams made a reality, but there were benefits of making money, and personal progress that came from it. Dawn states that, “In terms of what attracted me to Design Suite it was… the mentorship… being able to turn stuff in and get better every single time is huge for me in terms of progress… It was a personal choice that what I really wanted to do was fabric design, and I found that, through Design Suite.”

Overall, the decision that Dawn made to join the Design Suite program, and follow her dreams led to incredible outcomes and happiness she wouldn’t have otherwise found. Not only personal fulfillment and growth, but an open door to making money from her own designs, shortly after joining Design Suite. Turning Creativity into Cash: Simone Bowles’ Profitable Journey with Design Suite

Simone Bowles, a two-year Design Suite member, discusses with Carina Gardner about the incredible success and money she has made after joining the program in this podcast. She begins by talking about how she chose a career that was not quite creative enough for her.

Simone states, “I read this book by Julia Donaldson called the Artist’s Way, and she said that a lot of people who were creative go into careers that are almost creative.” In a world brimming with opportunities, the journey of fulfilling one’s creative and entrepreneurial aspirations can often feel like a daunting task. Simone took a leap of faith that many are afraid to do, leaving her past career and pursuing her creative dreams by joining the Design Suite program, tailored for aspiring designers who want to make money with their creations.

“In terms of actual graphic design, I knew nothing,” Simone explains, “I came from a world that was so different. [I felt like] the imposter, like ‘how am I going to do this?’ …But then I [remembered] that they chose me for a reason… It grew me in so many ways… and if you were to ask me the year before ‘would I do freelance graphic design’, it would be a definite no… I thought it would be so hard.”

Simone went into the program with hardly any experience of creative design. However, as the process went on for her, passion was ignited, breathing life into her artistic visions. She quickly found a love for what she was doing. She explained that, “This is for me, I want all of the things,” as the program went on for her. After the first year of the program, there was so much that Simone learned. She felt the strong desire to continue for another year, allowing her to make lots of money from this. “Honestly I feel like I can call myself a designer now… once you do, the jobs come!” Opportunity was met with hard work, and Simone’s work took off.

When talking about her success, Simone stated, “Just be open to the path that [comes] to you. If you try to go down one road you get so much resistance… I made the money within my second year [of the program]… I made enough to pay for the kids’ school tuition which isn’t cheap… and that was in my second year!”

After the decision was made to pursue this dream of Simone’s, she was rewarded. Design Suite is the catalyst for inspiration to make money, and Simone did just that in her second year of the journey. She was extremely grateful and emotional over the success she has reaped in the podcast when explaining the money she made to pay for the tuition of her kids’ educations. You truly get what you pay for when you join the Design Suite courses, along with opportunity and fulfillment bursting at the seams.

Not only did Simone make a great amount of money, she also built incredible relationships with those in the Design Suite community, which is huge. Simone goes on to say, “It’s key… I just know people I can go to who are now friends of mine… in the sewing world… in the patent world… in the papercraft world… that is gold.” She continues by saying, “There’s so many things [that make Design Suite good value]… It really is the community and the information… Design Suite has those supports.”

From all across the globe, there are members of the Design Suite program, and these members build one another up, offer advice, help, and friendship, taking things to a more meaningful level through this program. This brings that human connection that is missing in a lot of programs.

The opportunities are endless when becoming a member of Design Suite and embarking on the journey, allowing for personal and professional growth. The program serves as a catalyst for self-discovery, empowering individuals to leverage their strengths and carry out their niches in the creative landscape. Simone Bowles is an excellent example of this coming to reality.

Pop Dot Shadow Box Sliding Card for Silhouette

I’ve been loving the last few weeks of projects I have made for my Silhouette Store. I managed to finally finish Gilmore Girls for the second time and catch up on Community while making this last batch of cards.

This week I’ve added more Shadow Box cards to the shop but these are (drum roll) sliding cards! (If you are looking for the folded cards tutorial, see the blogpost below).

These fabulous cards allow you to slide off the shadow box part of the card. You can write a message directly on the shadow box or a secret message on the sliding card behind the shadow box. They are easy to put together and SOOOO cute!

Here’s a little 19 second video so you can see how these little cards come together.

Here’s the tutorial:

1. Cut out all the pieces in your svg file.

2. (See below) Fold the sleeve piece that has a glue flap. Glue the flap to the opposite side of the sleeve together to create a place for the card to slip through.

2. Once the sleeve is glued together, use it as the base of your shadow box. Glue down any “colored” objects first to the layers. For example, center and glue the clouds on top of the cloud shapes. You can use pop dots for these as well. You can see in the elephant and giraffe example above I used pop dots on the animals but glued the clouds flat.

3. Use pop dots to layer the pieces so that the card piece with the thinnest outside layer is on top and the thickest at the bottom. Place pop dots on corners and middles to keep the card stable. (See photo in previous blogpost to see how I place the pop dots.)

4. Once the shadow box is finished, slide in the “card.” (See photo to the left.)

5. Glue the accent pieces to the outside of the card. (see below.)

Helpful Tips:
+ For small or intricate cuts, I put my speed at 9 on my Silhouette Cameo instead of the typical 3. This is especially useful for the “baby” wording on the onesie card.

+ The bow on the cake card is not complicated. All you have to do is use the two score lines nearest the ends of the bow and pull them in to match to the middle score line. Use the tiny, thin piece to wrap the center of the bow. I used hot glue to make sure everything dried quickly and held together nicely. I also placed the bow on the second tier of the shadow box.

+ You can use any color cardstock for these shadowbox cards. I’ve used kraft paper in all my examples but white, black, gray, and any solid color would work wonderfully for a unique take on these cards.

+ These cards are sized for a gift card. You will need to tape in the gift card or hot glue the sliding card portion to create a pocket.
